Hedgehog Agonists Modulate Hair Growth; Preclinical Data Published in The Journal of Investigational Dermatology

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 1, 2005--Curis, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRIS), a therapeutic drug development company, today announced the publication of data reporting on the therapeutic efficacy of one of Curis' proprietary Hedgehog pathway activators in an adult animal model of hair growth. The results of the study show that a topically applied small molecule agonist of the Hedgehog signaling pathway can stimulate the transition of hair follicles from the resting to the growth stage of the hair cycle. The Hedgehog agonist induces hair growth and causes no other detectable short or long-term changes in the skin of the animals. This study also demonstrated that the Hedgehog agonist is active in human scalp in vitro as measured by Hedgehog pathway gene expression. The results suggest that topical application of a Hedgehog agonist could be effective in treating hair loss conditions, including male and female pattern hair loss. These results expand on those that were presented at the February 2005 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.

I would guess Curis and P&G will start phase 1 trial next early next year.... Then you have to have a phase 2 and phase 3, before it comes to the market. It is really anybodys guess as to how long that will take. Maybe 4-7 years from now. It is a big spread but it is really to hard to say at this moment in time.

Wouldn't this make developing hair multiplication irrelevant then? Some say hair multiplication might come as early as 2007.

First of all, thank u for this website. İ really learned lots of things about curis and hedgehog agonist here. İ live in belgium and now im having my holiday in Turkey. İ know lots of people who waits that curis drug in Belgium. I think i would never like to use curis' hehgehog agonist drug, coz of sunburn on my forehead near to my hair. İ think hedgehog agonist could be dangerous for sunburn.

What do you think about tb4? Do you think if it would be a good hairgrowth drug? Thank you for your attention......

Hi dave21,

Sorry i was in a hurry when I wrote the reply. Are you a Biology, Micro Biology, Cell Biology or Molecular Biology? IMO anything that has to do with certain key embryonic pathways such as hedgehog are very important and will hopefully yield important and useful information to help the well being of humans and other organisms.

Hi Untd77,

I am not sure if sunburn and the agonist would make a difference. If have frequent sunburns then you are more susceptible to genetic mutations caused by UV radiation. Making you at greater risk for skin cancer such as BCC. I haven't seen any articles that used a sunburn model and an Hh agonist. Regards to "tb4" let me read a little more about it and I will start another thread. Enjoy your stay in Turkey.

I recently graduated from Illinois State University with a Biology Major. It would be nice to have a job doing research for Curis's hair program.

I know it can be years away before Hedgehog would be available to the public. But when - and at what stage of testing - will it be anounced that it actually DOES regrow hair ON HUMANS? Right now, all we know is that it speed up growth on shaved mice.

Regards.
